Rebuilding Trust: Why U.S. Faith Communities Must Act Now to Prevent Abuse and Protect the Vulnerable

Across the United States, churches are facing a painful truth: the systems they rely on to protect their congregations—especially the most vulnerable—are often failing.

According to recent research reported by Levin Simes LLP, over 260,000 cases of child sexual abuse have been recorded within the Catholic Church globally over the past 70 years. The issue isn’t isolated. In Protestant churches, 1 in 3 women report being abused, and over 700 cases involving Southern Baptist leaders were uncovered in a single investigation.

These aren’t isolated incidents—they reflect a widespread crisis of protection and accountability. If left unaddressed, this crisis will continue to devastate lives, dismantle trust, and weaken the Church’s ability to live out its mission.
